Describe a Time When Your Computer Broke Down: IELTS Exam Cue Card Sample 1

This actually occurred to me approximately a year ago. In fact, I have two computers. The first is a desktop computer, and the second is a notebook computer. My desktop computer is very vintage, and my laptop is brand new. My cousin needed to prepare an assignment, so he asked for my laptop for a few hours. His machine was not running smoothly. I was hesitant to offer it to him at first because I am very possessive of it. But then I had the bright idea of assisting him. Then I promised to send him everything.

When he came to pick up the machine the next day, I decided to start it to show him some special features on my computer that would make it easy for him to use.

My laptop did not function, much to my surprise. I was perplexed and stunned. I did everything I could to restart it, but it was in vain. My cousin was really angry, because at first he felt I was doing it on purpose. When I called the computer technician, he said it would take a week to fix the error. I called a hardware engineer mate, and he confirmed my suspicions. I felt hopeless and I couldn’t do anything to fix it right away.

I was dissatisfied and perplexed as to what had gone wrong with the computer. It was aggravating and annoying, and I was concerned about missing valuable data and images.

I gave my laptop to be repaired and gave my cousin the use of my desktop computer. He was grateful and overjoyed. My machine was eventually fixed, but it cost me a lot of time, effort, and resources. I learned that while such high-tech devices are useful, we can not focus solely on them. Despite the fact that I did not lose any of my files, I learned the importance of having backups on hard discs. My machine broke down often after this show, but I kept daily backups of my files.

With the exponential increase in the number of electronic gadgets we use on a daily basis, there are often times where anything breaks and we need to get it fixed. Today, I’d like to speak about my Apple laptop, which was recently scratched and repaired at an IT market in Delhi. What transpired was that I was operating on a project late at night whilst sitting in bed, and I was using the laptop.

I didn’t even realize it when I fell asleep, and when I woke up in the morning, I found my laptop on the ground, presumably because it fell down when I was sleeping.

I quickly picked it up, only to discover that there was a large gap in the laptop’s screen. I attempted to turn it on, but it was inoperable. I felt terrible at the time and was afraid to tell my parents about it. So I decided to contact a friend, who advised me to go to the closest Apple store to assess the injury. When I arrived, the technician informed me that the panel had failed and that it needed to be replaced. He informed me that the cost of replacing the screen would be Rs 35,000.

I was surprised to know such a high maintenance cost when I had already lost a significant amount of money on the laptop. As a result, I returned home dissatisfied. Suddenly, it occurred to me that one of my other friends, who was in Delhi, had also encountered the same problem. So I called him and told him about the case. He told me that I could have it fixed for Rs 5000 at an IT market in Delhi and that the tech guy would replace my screen with the used one.

I then decided to tell my parents about it. They were initially depressed, just like me, but then they advised me to be cautious about how I used mobile devices in the future and gave me money for repairs.

Finally, I travelled to Delhi to get it fixed. The technician replaced the monitor, and thankfully, the used display seemed to be new, and I was happy to use my laptop afterwards. These days, I am very cautious about how I use mobile devices; I think I learned my lesson the hard way.

Conclusion
