The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) classifies an applicant on the basis of his or her English Proficiency. The exam is classified into two parts: IELTS Academic & IELTS General Training.

You must be aware that you are not being tested directly on the other tasks. But in the speaking section, you’re on a face-to-face with the examiner. This is a big deal for someone who might not be fluent or who has difficulty talking in English.

The speaking section 2 has a task called the cue card questions. In the IELTS Cue Card task, you get about one minute to get ready to speak about a cue card question. The directions are given to you by the examiner. Your talking session should last for two minutes before the interviewer asks you to end.

How to Approach Your Speaking Topics

IELTS Generally speaking topics are not General Knowledge. It evolves around individuals/events/anecdotes in daily life.

There is a carefully designed strategy behind any good thing. The IELTS test is no different. Start with the micro-planning.

Start by jotting down the key points on the card. Writing is important as it lets you get a clear sense of the rhythm you need to preserve while you’re talking.

You prefer to recall and add extra-small information that elaborates on your skills and experience. Your ideas should be organic, and your delivery should be of considerable length.

Cue Card Question: Describe A Risk that You Have Taken Which had A Positive Result

Divide this question into four parts:

  1. What was it?
  2. Why you took it?
  3. What was the result?
  4. How did you feel about it?

Next up you will see a model answer which will hit all these four points. So read carefully.

What was It/ Introduction

To be realistic, risk plays a major role in any person’s life, because it not only raises your confidence level but also motivates a person to try something new and challenging. I have witnessed a situation where I helped a child that involved risk.

It was around two years ago. I travelled to Agra with my family to visit the Taj Mahal by train. The weather was very pleasant, and we all enjoyed playing games and having some snacks prepared by my mother for the trip.

Why You Took It?

Instantly, I heard some noise, and I asked people what had happened, and then one person told me that one child’s arm had gotten trapped in the train doors. I asked my parents, how come nobody was ready enough to help the little child. I and my cousin decided to help him. I rushed to the train door with my cousin.

What was the Result?

At first, I  instructed my cousin to pull the chain but unfortunately, the chain was not working. So it was quite risky to rescue anyone on the running train. But we didn’t give up and kept trying. My cousin held me tightly when I helped the boy. First, I gave the child some water and then decided to move his arm very slowly, because if I was in a rush, that child could face serious injury.

How did You Feel about It?

It took half an hour to free the child’s arm from the train door. But I did it and as a result, my cousin and I have safely rescued that child without injury. We were relieved and proud of ourselves at the same time.

Things to Keep in Mind While Speaking

Do not repeat; strive not to repeat the same points over and over again.  You don’t get a ranking for that. Instead, it could demonstrate your limited thought capacity to the investigator.

Knowing a decent number of words is a major plus. Just for the sake of sounding cool, do not use words. It’s doing more damage than good. Make it a habit to learn ten new words a day on a daily basis. Use them in everyday interactions, too, to get more used to them.

Self – Correction is great, but don’t do it at the end of each sentence.

Don’t fake your accent while you engage in a conversation. Your pronunciation may be confusing and may not be clearly understood by the examiner. Instead, keep your expression organic!

Conclusion

To achieve your desired target and reach the 7+ league needs not just strategy or will it takes a decent amount of practice to regularly get your scores to a good level.
