Studying in Canada is the dream of many Indians, and with each passing year, the number of people applying for Canada immigration increases. The increase in applications has resulted in excess of Canadian student visa rejections.

International studies permits were rejected in 39% of cases in the first half of 2019, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada data. Most of these rejections are based on some of the common reasons mentioned below in this article.

What Are the Reasons for the Refusal of Canada Student Visa?

Families with Strong Ties to Canada

Individuals who apply by themselves can also be turned down, even if they have family members living in Canada.  A legal argument and reference to a Federal Court Case in the application can overcome this reason.

Double Intent

When a temporary residence permit expires, a study permit or work permit is no longer valid. Yet, such individuals are permitted to intend to become permanent residents under the doctrine of dual intent.

If a temporary resident intends to leave when the permit expires before obtaining permanent residency, it is okay for them to do all they can to become permanent residents. Despite that, even those with good records of compliance are denied study permits because they indicated their intent to apply for permanent residency.

Plan of Study

Unless the officer sees a logical and detailed study plan, he will not believe that Canada is intended for studies.  Once a person has previously completed postgraduate study or gained work experience, there should be a logical progression into further study.

It must make sense to the student to choose a program in Canada, or a proper explanation must be provided as to how their diploma in Canada will benefit them back home.  It is the leading cause of refusal.

Finances Proof

The average Canadian tuition is $15,000. It is the goal of the Canadian government to ensure a student can cover tuition and living expenses.  To prove the ownership, a bank statement containing at least CAD 30,000 must be provided.

Inadequate Travel History

An individual who has never travelled outside their home country will be denied a visa if they apply on their own.  Using legal arguments and references, this reason can be overcome.

Language Proficiency in English

It is mandatory for non-native English speaking international students to submit proof of language proficiency. You must have the appropriate standardised English language test scores (TOEFL or IELTS exam). Despite meeting the minimum mandatory points requirements for the DLI ELP, an applicant may still be rejected for a student visa to Canada if he does not satisfy the program requirements.

To ensure that the study permit is not denied, applicants must make sure they meet the minimum score requirements for each program.

Tips to Do While Applying to Reduce Your Chances of Being Rejected for a Canadian Student Visa

After learning a few of the common reasons for visa denial, here are some valuable tips on how to avoid visa denial in the first place.

#. Prepare a checklist of required documents to be submitted to obtain a study visa. The official site of the Government of Canada provides a listing of the same.

#. Fill out the visa application completely and accurately. Ensure that there is no blank space in any column.

#. Additionally, students must upload a copy of the offer letter that they received from a recognised Canadian university or college.

#. Under SPP, the applicant must provide proof of finances in the form of an Investment Guarantee Certificate, which can be obtained by transferring CAD 10,000 to Scotia Bank. ICICI Bank also offers GICs to Indian students.

#. Among the most important papers used to introduce a visa applicant to a visa officer is the statement of intent. Be sure to mention the academic achievements and the intention of studying in Canada.

What to Do After Refusal of Canada Student Visa?

Discover the reason why your visa application was rejected first. You will receive a refusal letter from IRCC if you have been rejected for a study permit, visitor visa, work permit, permanent residence, or any other type of application.

However, the refusal letter consists of only basic information with generic phrases to indicate why you were not approved. Your refusal letter does not specify why the officer refused your application in this particular case.

If the officer wrote a note about the grounds for refusal, he or she would provide more details about what went wrong with the application and how to improve it the next time around. Due to the lack of a fast and efficient appeals process, handling a study permit rejection is tough. If a study permit application is rejected, the applicant has three options:

#1. Reconsideration request: An immigration officer is required to reevaluate and reconsider the initial decision. If the request is accepted, there is very little scope for reversing the rejection, even if it is not obliged to entertain such requests.

#2. Canada’s Federal Court appeal: The appeals process may be a better option for impartial assessment of the decision and reversing a rejected claim that was improperly interpreted, but it is a costly and time-consuming process. The matter may take up to twelve months to be decided by a judge. Even then, the judge is not authorised to modify the decision or approve a study permit.

#3. Send in a new application: This is probably the least favourable of the three options. An incorrect refusal can then be used as a basis for future application rejections as well. A reapplication effectively makes a mistaken rejection part of the record, so any correction must be made explicitly in the new application.

The application may seek information regarding the reason for its rejection through a request for Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP). Officially, these requests must be processed within 30 days, although it may take much longer.
