Analysis Of The IELTS Speaking Question: Something That Helps Concentrate On Work

Concentration is one of the most important virtues that you can inculcate as it helps you in getting things done. The ability to concentrate in a world that is filled with distractions can often get challenging. The question asks us to describe an activity that we do in order to achieve better concentration.

Being able to focus while at work or during our studies is extremely important so as to obtain desired results. Think about how often you need to concentrate in order to do something. Think about the distractions that deter you and of ways that you resort to in order to overcome them. List those pointers down and use them in your two-minute speech.

Mind Map

Let’s create a mind map of the topic at hand – Describe something you do that can help you concentrate on work/study.

Creating a mind map helps us remain fixated on the topic we are presented with and avoid deviations. Writing the main topic in the center and then jotting down relevant points associated with it will help us build our speech systematically.

Let’s observe the mind map drawn below.

Being able to concentrate at work is an absolute necessity. For a long period of time, I had been unable to properly concentrate on my agenda for the day. Compartmentalizing the different areas of my life seemed far-fetched and the inability to concentrate on the task at hand took me more time than was needed in order to complete the activity.

I figured out a way of combating this problem eventually. Time blocking or allotting 24 hours of your day to everything that you take up really worked for me. I would make a list of activities for the day and allot a certain amount of time for every one of those activities.

I would allot 8 hours of my day to working, 2 hours to fitness, 7 hours to sleep, 1 hour to reading, 1 hour to watching a documentary, 1  hour to cooking my food and the remaining time to other miscellaneous activities that needed my attention.

Time blocking is a really effective manner of not only managing one’s time but also making sure that you do not miss out on anything important. It helps me stay more attuned with my day and also instils an element of discipline in the way in which I do things.

It helps me stay fixated on the task that I am doing and also ensures that I do not spend more time doing something.  I usually make my agenda in the morning where I list down everything that needs to be looked into. After meditation, the first thing that I do is create my task list. I then write down the time that it should take me to complete every task right next to it. This helps me feel in control of my day from the very beginning.

Ever since I have been following this, I have felt more mindful of the way in which I do things. I do not feel distracted every now and then as the moment my mind wanders away, I remind myself of how a particular task needs to be completed within a given time span. This immediately resets my focus and energies towards the work that I am doing.
