Ever heard the term ‘Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)?’ All of you who wish to build a life in Canada must have come across this term somewhere or the other. PNPs act as the pathway for all those individuals who wish to settle in Canada. It is a prerequisite for Canadian permanent residency.

Every province in Canada other than Quebec and Nunavut has a PNP. These provinces need to meet their immigration goals each year and provide residency to immigrants who are eligible in every regard.

An agreement of the province and the immigration authorities sees to it that only the most befitting candidates are chosen for the program. All provinces have their own requirements and criteria when it comes to the selection of candidates.

You will need to check the website of the province that you plan on settling in so that you can understand the process of applying.

STEPS OF ACQUIRING A PR THROUGH PNP

  • Visit the website of the province that you wish to settle in and read their rules. You need to understand whether or not you’re eligible for residency.
  • There are two streams – Express Entry and Non-Express Entry. Express Entry allows skilled workers to move to Canada smoothly whereas the Non-Express Entry is for the non-skilled workers.
  • After you have been nominated by a certain province, you apply to the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for acquiring permanent residence.
  • You may have to undergo a medical check as well as a background screening.
  • These applications take 4-6 months of processing time
  • Once your application reaches the concerned immigration authorities, they let you know that your application is being processed.
  • You may be asked to submit more documents or even appear for an interview.
  • The status of your application and your permanent residency results will be declared once the documents are thoroughly reviewed.

The primary goal of a Provincial Nominee Program is to spread the benefits of immigration to the rest of the corners.

PNP streams also award the Express Entry candidates an additional 600 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points that cements their chances of gaining a permanent residency.
