IELTS Reading and Listening Remark

If you are unsatisfied with your scores in the reading or listening section, then think twice. The answers are always either this or that and are objectively marked and hence there is a very low possibility of them being wrong. If only there is a clerical error then only your scores will increase but that is a really rare case.

IELTS Writing and Speaking Remark

On the other hand, if you are unsatisfied with the writing or speaking section and think the examiner has scored you wrongfully then you may go with re-evaluation. In these sections, the examiner has to do some interpretation of the answers and there is sometimes fault but it’s very rare. So if you feel like your scores are not satisfying and you could have been scored higher you may apply for re-evaluation.

Do Scores Increase in EOR?

This is the difficult answer as your marks are evaluated by experts trained professionally. Moreover, they cannot be wrong in objective ones (Reading and Listening) as there is only yes or no in that.

While in the descriptive ones there could be cases of misinterpretation but that is also very rare. Therefore the possibility of your scores getting increased by this recheck is low. But as we say humans tend to make mistakes and if you feel your examiner has evaluated your speaking or writing scores wrongfully you can go ahead with this re-evaluation process.

Moreover, it costs money and time, and if your scores don’t change you won’t get any refund or benefit.

Things to Consider Before Going For EOR

So before you make your mind to go for the recheck process, consider these things:

#1. When Do you Need the Scores?

Suppose you need your scores within two weeks then taking a re-evaluation would be a waste as the results come in 6 weeks. And till then the deadline would be passed. Moreover, till the results come back you cannot send your scores anywhere.

#2. Do You Want to Risk Your Money?

As we have already stated above that the success rate of our is very low and the fees are high i.e. around INR 11,000+ (this can vary according to the test centre) you are more likely to lose your fees. If there is a change in the scores IELTS would refund the application fees to you but it doesn’t then you won’t get any refund. That you should only go for the remark if you are confident and ready to put your money at stake.

#3. Are You Confident About Yourself?

If you are confident about your performance and think that you have performed a lot better in the mock tests and scores higher than the result you can go with the recheck. But in this case, you have to consider whether you were good during the exam or not, did you give your best in the exam or were you nervous.

What is the Success Rate of EOR?

The success rate of EOR is very low. IELTS examiners are professionally trained and hardly make any mistakes in evaluating scores. Moreover, if the scores look wrong to them they check it again before declaring it.

Moreover for reading and listening the success rate is extremely low as they are objective types of questions. Also even if you were technically right then your scores could be deducted for bad handwriting too. Therefore you should never go for re-evaluation for these sections.

On the other hand, there is still a chance of the examiner being wrong or having misinterpreted your speaking or writing scores. But remember that the examiner has to go through different phases of training hence it is rare of them to be wrong.

Among these two sections, the success rate of writing is relatively higher than speaking. However, even if your scores increase it will be only around 0.5+.

For example, suppose your scores are like this:

Listening: 7.0

Reading: 7.0

Writing: 6.5

Speaking: 7.5

Overall: 7.0

If the examiner has misinterpreted and your scores increase it would look like this.

Listening: 7.0

Reading: 7.0

Writing: 7.0

Speaking: 7.5

Overall: 7.0

As you can see there was only a 0.5 increase in the writing scores and then there was a negligible increase in the overall score. This is why sometimes even if your scores increase, rechecking may not procure any benefit to you.

When Should You Take EOR?

Before we get on when to go for a recheck let us explain when you should not go for a recheck.

You should not go for a recheck if there is a huge margin gap between your scores. For example, suppose your scores are like this:

Listening: 8

Reading: 8

Writing: 8

Speaking: 6.5

You should not go with a recheck in such cases as the examiner has already reached your score before publishing. Whenever examiners encounter such results they go for a recheck among themselves before declaring the final result. And hence you would only waste your time and money.

Now coming back to when you should go for the recheck in IELTS. When there is only a 0.5 score difference between your desirable scores and obtained one you can try to recheck. For example,

If your scores look like this:

Reading: 8.0

Listening: 8.0

Writing: 7.5

Speaking: 8.0

In such cases, you can try to go with rechecking. But then you should be confident and assured about your performance.
