Traditions are always full of meaning and life. They are prevalent in every culture and are passed on from one generation to the next.

I would like to speak about a tradition that we celebrate in our country. Most of us celebrate Makar Sankranti during the month of January. It is a time when we reach out to the not so privileged people and distribute items that they can use during winter such as food grains, sweetmeats, blankets, woolens and money. Makar  Sankranti marks the first day of the sun’s transit and is an extremely significant tradition that we all follow.

Most Indians are aware of what it is but do not celebrate it with pomp. The festival is known by different names in different corners of the country such as Magh Bihu in Assam, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Uttrayan in Jammu, Maghi in Punjab, Dahi Chura in Bihar and so forth.

I especially like Makar Sankranti as it shifts the focus from the wealthy and how they celebrate festivals to the ones who can barely afford to celebrate them. It celebrates the gift of life as well as the bounty that God has blessed humans within the form of food, grains, seeds and the like. It has more meaning than the other traditions that we celebrate and is also a way of worshiping the Sun.

I celebrate this festival by getting up in the morning and then making a list of all those things that I wish to distribute to the ones who are deprived. I then arrange them in separate baskets and distribute them to people who mainly stand in queues on this day. The joy that I derive through this activity is indescribable as it involves doing something for those who are not as privileged as you. The festival isn’t about you, it’s about a segment of those people who are often neglected.
